Abbreviations Explained

GPA (Grade Point Average): A numerical representation of your academic performance, calculated by averaging grade points across all courses.

Credit Hours: The number of hours per week a course meets, representing its weight in GPA calculation.

Grade Points: Numerical values assigned to letter grades (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0).

Weighted GPA: GPA calculation that gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB courses.

Unweighted GPA: Standard 4.0 scale GPA without extra weight for advanced courses.

Cumulative GPA: Overall GPA across all semesters or terms.

How the Calculation Works

GPA is calculated using a weighted average:

GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ(Credit Hours)

Standard Grade Point Scale:

  • A = 4.0 points
  • B = 3.0 points
  • C = 2.0 points
  • D = 1.0 points
  • F = 0.0 points

Example: Three courses:
• Math (3 credits, A): 4.0 × 3 = 12 points
• English (3 credits, B): 3.0 × 3 = 9 points
• History (4 credits, A): 4.0 × 4 = 16 points
• Total: 37 points / 10 credits = 3.70 GPA

Note: Some schools use plus/minus grading (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.) or weighted scales for honors courses. Check your institution's specific grading policy.
