Abbreviations Explained

MPG (Miles Per Gallon): A measure of fuel efficiency indicating how many miles a vehicle can travel on one gallon of fuel.

Fuel Economy: The efficiency with which a vehicle uses fuel, typically measured in MPG.

Trip Distance: The total number of miles traveled on a journey.

Fuel Consumed: The amount of gasoline used during a trip, measured in gallons.

Cost Per Gallon: The price of one gallon of gasoline at the pump.

EPA (Environmental Protection Agency): U.S. agency that provides official fuel economy ratings for vehicles.

How the Calculation Works

Fuel efficiency and cost calculations:

Calculate MPG:

MPG = Miles Driven / Gallons Used

Example: 300 miles on 12 gallons = 300 / 12 = 25 MPG

Calculate Fuel Needed:

Gallons Needed = Trip Distance / MPG

Example: 400-mile trip, 25 MPG = 400 / 25 = 16 gallons

Calculate Trip Cost:

Total Cost = Gallons Needed × Price Per Gallon

Example: 16 gallons at $3.50/gallon = 16 × $3.50 = $56

US Average Fuel Economy (2024):
• Passenger Cars: 25-35 MPG
• SUVs: 20-28 MPG
• Trucks: 18-25 MPG
• Hybrids: 40-55 MPG
