Tax Bracket: The range of income taxed at a particular rate in the progressive tax system.

Effective Tax Rate: Your total tax divided by total income, representing your average tax rate.

Standard Deduction: A fixed dollar amount that reduces taxable income (2024: $14,600 single, $29,200 married filing jointly).

How the Calculation Works

U.S. federal income tax uses a progressive bracket system (2024 rates):

Single Filers:

• 10% on income up to $11,600

• 12% on income $11,601-$47,150

• 22% on income $47,151-$100,525

• 24% on income $100,526-$191,950

• 32% on income $191,951-$243,725

• 35% on income $243,726-$609,350

• 37% on income over $609,350

Calculation Process:

  1. Start with gross income
  2. Subtract standard/itemized deduction = Taxable income
  3. Apply progressive tax brackets to taxable income
  4. Sum tax from each bracket = Total tax owed

Example: Single filer, $75,000 income, standard deduction:
• Taxable income: $75,000 - $14,600 = $60,400
• Tax: ($11,600 × 10%) + ($35,550 × 12%) + ($13,250 × 22%)
• Tax: $1,160 + $4,266 + $2,915 = $8,341
• Effective rate: 11.1% (not 22% marginal rate)
